In the 1970s, MDMA (ecstasy) was given to psychotherapy patients because it helped them open up and talk about their feelings. This practice was stopped in 1986 when animal studies and ecstasy tests results on animals showed that ecstasy caused brain damage. 

MDMA is not clearly a stimulant, although it has, in common with amphetamine drugs, a capacity to increase blood pressure and heart rate. MDMA does produce some perceptual changes in the form of increased sensitivity to light, difficulty in focusing and blurred vision in some users. In high doses, MDMA can interfere with the body's ability to regulate temperature. 

Users of MDMA face many of the same risks as users of other stimulants such as cocaine and amphetamines.
